Scena Plastyczna, a theatre company based at the Catholic University of Lublin was founded in 1970 by Leszek Madzik, then an art history student . The first production Ecce Homo had a spoken text and its theatrical space was built with flat paintings inspired by Gothic art. In the productions that followed Births, Supper, Fibres Leszek Mądzik resigned from words and plot, replacing them with visual space, dynamics of movement and expression of visually transformed bodies. Icarus is considered to be a turning point in the history of the company. Following the elimination of words, the role of an actor was reduced considerably. In Leszek Mędzik’s theatre actor ceased to ‘play’. His function can be best defined as his co-existence with matter on stage, feeling it and exposing in such a way that it becomes a substance of action. Bringing an object to life and making an actor an object is not a paradox, but a part of the Leszek Mądzik’s philosophy, looking for humbleness in art. Just like the rejection of colour, for since the premiere of Moisture black is a canvas on which ‘liveimages’ painted with light, the basis for dramatic tension in performances, are brought to life.
