A literary inspiration for Words in the Sand was provided by Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days. Winnie, the protagonist is alone in some remote and isolated place. She cannot move for her legs are stuck in the sand. A huge umbrella and big traveling bag are symbols of her past. She cannot move, but she can speak.. And she speaks…. all the time watching if there is anybody listening to her. Words are only sounds in the sand Birute Mar’s performance, a winner of numerous prizes, is a great metaphor of life. Not only did the actress find a huge emotional charge in Beckett’s text, but she also made attempts at grasping and understanding the illogical logic of the protagonist. Beckett’s Winnie is equipped with all aspects of humanity – joy, strong will, attachment, devotion, care, experience of youth and old age. The performance is a unique concert of actor’s potential subjected to the restrictions imposed by circumstances. Birute acts with voice and gesture primarily. She is a perfectionist in this area. She looks like a big, forgotten rag doll imprisoned in her big skirt. We can only see some parts of her – her hands, hair, pale face and glass eyes. The coldness of her glance and the grimace of her expression make us perceive her as a person tired with her life. This doll carries the truth of life inside.
