Łukasz Czuj, the director, admits that Gombrowicz has always fascinated him. He wanted to look at him through his own eyes. The year of Gombrowicz offered an opportunity to approach the writer from an entirely different perspective. „I had an idea to look at Gombrowicz through Gombrowicz, to put on his glasses and see what has happened with his writings, his protagonists; to look for a slightly different writer than he is traditionally considered to be (…) Gombrowicz created his own world, directed his life, work and even the reception of his oeuvre. He wanted to control everything. It did not happen by accident that he wrote long introductions to his theatre plays, made extensive comments on their contents…I believe it is high time to show the other side of Gombrowicz when the world slips out of hiscontrol. He does not steer it any more; the world starts steering him… and he gets terrified by all aspects of existence.(…) The text of the play is an elaborated mosaic of scenes which I adapted from Gormbrowicz’s novels, diaries, correspondence, memoirs, and dramas. There are scenes which are completely original, characters related to Gombrowicz’s characters, situations developed on the basis of authentic events, sometimes purely fictional, but they could have easily happened. However, it is not a biographical play in any sense. It is a story of Gombrowicz’s state of spirit and mind.
