According to director Algirdas Latenas Czechov’s play are like icebergs. What can be seen at the level of the text is just a peak; most important is hidden under water. And that is why Czechov’s plays are extraordinarily dynamic. The estate where the drama is located turns out to be a cage into which another life sneaks in, introducing anomalies into routine. These anomalies get manifested through love. Therefore Wojnicki’s complaints about his life lost in vain seem to be even more tantalizing. The director endows the performance a polyphonic structure; the ordinary country life is placed next to the reality situated on the other side of the looking-glass, giving an impression of two worlds coming together – of light and darkness, music and screaming, woman and … siren from the other world.
