The director shows that it is us here and now who are ‘in between’. The world has changed and we have changed. Sadowski discloses the Polish ‘distance’ from the East and from the West, our new ‘normality’. We are still neither here nor there. One step in one direction – to the West and nothing concerning the suffering and entanglement of the people of the East can be understood. Sadowski grasped pertinently this change in our mentality. For we started to believe that everything around us has its order and purpose. Life follows its stock exchange rhythm, however nervous still apt to be foreseen, because fall is followed by rise, rise is followed by fall. We ceased wondering at this world. At the same time we benefited to some extent from going away from what we once termed absurd. Having been involved in the avalanches of paradoxes, we did not notice silent tragedies like the one Elena experienced. Until recently her death could have been considered an ordinary phenomenon, ‘something normal’, as if a public contribution paid to the mechanism which we were subjected to.”
