Three Sisters is a classical Russian drama which has been often classified – like all Checkhov’s works – as to be performed by the Russians only. Nobody like the Russians can understand his sense of space and time. Nobody is possessed by such longing and melancholy. Time and man lost in time and space are the major protagonists of Chechov’s dramas. Therefore Three Sisters, as a material and inspiration for the Japanese, amazes and intrigues. The company admits that the text provided only an inspiration and motivation on which a new tragic comedy was constructed, – a portrayal of modern women with their longings and passions. It is an extremely sensual and captivating performance in which erotic motives, destructive emotions and feelings form the stage reality which Czechov would not be able to dream about.
