In ‘Wandering’ Jarocki investigates not so much Gombrowicz’s real as his spiritual biography. In the selected fragments of his writings, the director looks for the traces of the writer’s struggle for his own identity. Sometimes the struggle for a decent place for his ‘ego’ is funny, and sometimes dramatic. It reveals the frail and mysterious nature of man’s fate, suspended „between the Young and God” (quoted after Gombrowicz) – I am looking for the traces of Gombrowicz the difficult – Jerzy Jarocki admits – scattered here and there in his works. This trickier Gombrowicz is not a bore. He is a witty, ironic and bitter narrator who looks at himself and searches for his own identity, truth about himself. It is a highly acclaimed production. Not only was Jarocki’s narration appreciated, but also acting, especially in relation to a character of Witold, played by three actors (Marcin Przybylski, Mariusz Bonaszewski and Jan Englert). Jerzy Jarzębski admires Małgorzata Kożuchowska’s virtuosity, and refers to it in the context of “a splendid sequence of roles”. She is Alice from Virginity, Albertynka from Operetta and, finally Rita Gombrowicz. Ko¿uchowska is a truly Gombrowicz actress with a great sense of a form, especially as Albertynka, where she succeeded in maintaining a perfect balance between naivety and sensuality.
Jarzębski, one of the most distinguished scholars specializing in Gombrowicz, continues ‘ at the moment I am not capable of describing all tensions and explosions generated at those places where fragments taken from Gombrowicz’s works merge. I can only realize my own fascination generated by Jarocki’s attempt at a synthetic approach to a multiple self-portrait of the writer.
