One of the most important and interesting Lublin stories. A narrative inspired by the life of priest and philosopher who finds out that he is not who (he thinks) he is. He tries to discover his true identity but in the contemporary world, where one has to clearly state one’s origin, denomination or nationality, he is more and more starting to experience otherness and alienation. His attempts to piece together his identity anew frequently make him bear the brunt of unexpected situations and adventures, which are insulated against tragedy by laughter and a lively, burlesque plot. Directed by Ondrej Spišák, who boasts an over fifteen-year-long creative partnership with Tadeusz Słobodzianek, the show premiered at the 2017 New Epiphanies – Lenten Lamentations Festival.

Tadeusz Słobodzianek’s Story of Jacob confirms that – after years of dodging the issue – the Polish theatre has finally seen the institutional pathologies of the Church.
Witold Mrozek, „Gazeta Wyborcza”

There are beautiful and moving moments as well, such as Jacob’s sermon during the funeral mass for mothers – both Polish and Jewish: his Polish own, perished in a cremation oven, and the mother of Jesus. After all, the theme of women – humbly serving their husband and sons, and – as nuns – attending to the needs of priests – is an important if background narrative strand of the play.
