Maja Kleczewska’s play is about distrust. Trust is a system of contracts that allow the realization of large joint projects. The consequences of distrust are mutual accusations, the feeling of being deceived and intolerance.
The goal of “Under the Influence” is to make a film in the theatre in front of the audience.
The audience participates in parallel processes. They watch the actors on the set, watch the film in the making and watch the film at the same time.
Woman is the Nigger of the World
“Under the Influence” poses a question about socially acceptable norms.
When do we go beyond them?
Who decides when we do?
Who is a normal person and how are they perceived?
Normal, average, typical, medium, mass, common, standard, correct, general, optimal, regular, natural?
Who is a woman in society and what are the norms and expectations for her?
The norm is the pattern by which normality is stated or assessed. Departure from the norm excludes, stigmatizes. People who do not meet the expectations of the environment become niggers of the world.

Maja Kleczewska is the farthest from the established theses, she avoids even traces of opinion-making, does not look for strong effects, does not reinvent the wheel. She gave her best performance in years in Katowice, aiming for an intimate psychology, without ready-made prescriptions, but as close as possible to a human being. (…) Mabel may just as well be a he and a she, and most of all, us. Kleczewska portrays all those who have given up the mainstream of life, fled from the general pressure, and risked madness in search of inner freedom. Very suggestive.
Jacek Wakar, Onet.pl
The performance is a poignant portrait of Mabel – a middle-aged woman, mother and wife suffering from mental disorders who is struggling simultaneously with her family and her own condition. It is also a picture of prejudices and violent psychiatry from years ago. (…) “Under the Influence” is certainly one of the most interesting events in Śląski Theatre in recent times.
